I was more confused than you! 😅

By the time I started to study astrology seriously, I was lost.

I had been practicing meditation and Indian energetics for years, since 1983. Most of this early "study" was practicing meditation techniques form the books of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, later called "Osho".

The Tantric meditations healed my young broken heart.

As a child of divorce, with 2 parents who never loved each other and who had a lot of personal problems, I came into the world with a lot of anger, pain and frustration. Meditation was (and is) the healing balm. But by the late 90's I had gotten separated from my spiritual Self.

I had been pursuing a career in music. But the truth is – I was just a lost, broke, “musician” going nowhere.

A pretty pathetic character indeed!

Then, an unexpected "LUCKY" break

Then the divine intervened, I LOST MY DAY JOB! This gave me the space to pursue what I had abandoned years before.

At first, I focused on Yoga and meditation, because that was my path from years before. It was great to teach & reconnect to spirit that way. I taught many yoga classes per week for a few years while I was doing astrology research. I also focused on music and played Kirtan concerts every 2 weeks for a couple of years. Kirtan is devotional Indian music.

Astrology Eventually Wins Out
,…eventually astrology took over and became the #1 Thing. I loved teaching yoga and loved playing music, but Vedic astrology was my passion.

This lead to years of solitary research, leading to my first book, “The Ascendant – 108 Planets of Vedic Astrology”. But during this time, I was dealing with one huge problem – and I know you can relate.

There was no system or professional training available
Like you, I was very inspired by the rhythms of the cosmos and fascinated by how it was all reflected in the charts.

There was so much to learn. There were so many details to get straight :: I would listen to teachers, in awe, and wish that I could also read charts.

But most of what I was hearing from those teachers was not resonating with me at all. (Not to be critical of others, but it is true) Either it was too “fatalistic” and closed-ended or it was too “airy fairy” and not specific enough. So much was focused on materiality and predictions, etc.

Teachers were confused, with no system. Some were even confused about things as basic as the Zodiac.

I had a long history with it already - and did not hear much “Vedic Wisdom” from other teachers I was listening to.

That didn't stop me from getting the Certifications that were available to me. But frankly, they did not mean anything.

Empty Certifications - No SYSTEM - So I Built One.

Those Certifications were just memorizing details with no system of how to actually practice astrology.

So, I went back to MY basics, of Yoga and meditation and just dug into the source texts (which led to my first book). I saw what was making every thing happen, based on organizing (then going deeply) into a few key principles first. To my shock and surprise, it worked!

I had stumbled onto a rock-solid system that was based on a pure interpretation of the Classic texts. But to be honest, it was being in the presence of my SatGuru Amma that brought the texts to life for me. I am not saying this in a "Religious" context/"Belief in Her". Being in the presence of a living embodiment of the teachings, (Astrological, Yogic, etc.) brought all of the energy to life in ME! And it clarified to me what was missing from the teachings I was hearing.

The first idea that I realized is this:
"Astrology is not something Up There, It is something In Here."
This validated what I had always known about life / oneness etc.. From my earliest days.

What had been frustrating me so much about astrology and what I was hearing,.. Boiled down to this.

I Thought We Are All "One" Energy

We are all supposed to be one,.. One energy.
Then we start to study astrology and everything is "Good and Bad".
Good planets and bad planets.
Good Karma and Bad Karma.

What if "The Truth" is still TRUE, even in Astrology?,.. And it is all part of the "Divine Lila" (Play of God's Grace) – and working out the way it is supposed to?

What if Astrology is just a showing different moods of the Divine Mother – and all of the planets are divine? Some lessons are harder because we are still immature.
What a concept!

Sitting at the feet of Amma, watching HER divine moods for hours and days and years not only made this a "belief",.. It made it factual for me – and confirmed my decades of practice.

With new found inspiration, confidence and a new "lifestyle", I set out to do my best. So I took a leap of faith into a "Career Path" that was unknown to me in a very expensive City, San Francisco.

I started doing astrology full-time – mostly doing readings. But quickly began teaching – as my heart has always resonated more with "teaching people to fish".

This led to my first full “System” Course in 2006 with a select group of Students. It was a trial run, but people loved it. Then I launched the first formal Certification course in 2008. Then in 2010 Dattatreya Shiva Baba (Dr. Pillai) hired me to teach the same course to his students. Then in 2012 I relaunched the Course in a semester format, with homework and full contact. Then in 2018 the course was later improved into its current form to give full access to all material and bonuses and monthly conference calls.

Also In 2018, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar published my book "Yoga and Vedic Astrology" after noticing the rapid progress of his long-time student under my tutelage.

What does this have to do with you?

The Biggest Problems You Face

-- BIG PROBLEM #1: Snacking Behavior - Memorization is Not Mastery 😟
The reason you are bewildered by astrology, is you have not mastered these details. When I say "mastered", I don't mean "memorized". Perhaps you have them memorized some, but mastery is not memorization. Mastery means you can flawlessly interpret each of these principles by themselves, which then gives you enormous skill in synthesizing them in real time. Like most astrology students.

Confusion & The Illusion of understanding
This creates a huge "illusion of understanding" around what you think you know already. Simply because you have memorized the exaltation and debilitation point of planets, does not mean you understand "why" the points are there. If you cannot explain it, simply, to another person, then you do not understand it yet. Also, knowing how to see that thing in context, and as a part of a larger chart/person is the ONLY thing that matters.

-- BIG PROBLEM #2: Priorities Are Mixed Up 😕
A lack of prioritizing is another big problem you are facing. Not only have you mistaken memorization for mastery, but your priorities are mixed up. You have this idea that some subtle, nuanced yoga you have memorized in one of the harmonic charts, is as important as the dignity of the planet in the seventh house, or the gunas and elements of the ascendant or moon, for example.

Confusion of Being "Out of Sequence"
This is why even though you may make a lot of correct statements, underneath it all you have no confidence in what you are saying. You are just repeating things you have memorized with no priority and in no Sequence - A hang nail is just as important as a heart attack to you!

-- BIG PROBLEM #3: No Confidence - "So Complicated" to Learn. 😩
I thought this too because I was following the "Memorization,.." model above. It is not that complicated if you have a system. One of the things that makes me kind of angry is this idea that so many students have now, that they need to be "gifted" in order to learn. That is not true. This course has been time-tested and use to certify more than 500 students. It is like any college-level course.
YOU CAN DO IT!

"Astrology Teachers" can confuse you more
I know why you think it is so complicated, because you have been told that, whether explicitly or implicitly. Meaning, so many times you have listened to a teacher and thought they were brilliant, but YOU do not understand. So you think it was YOUR FAULT that you did not understand.
IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT THAT TEACHERS ARE CONFUSING YOU.

-- BIG PROBLEM #4: Disconnected From Purpose 😭
I want you to not only be able to interpret other people's charts correctly, but to be able to interpret your own chart correctly as well. I want you to also understand your place in the cosmos. These are the things we focus on in the level I Certification Course, for nine months, going deeper into what the structures actually mean, and then doing them in the proper order. Once you do this, that astrology information you have gathered becomes incredibly tight.

Lost, Scared and Confused?
We are living in very transitional times. I don't know what I would do if I did not have these teachings to anchor my life and my path. Not only that, but our sense of "COMMUNITY" is very lacking these days. We have the illusion of connection, rather than the real thing or the good thing. Meaning, the internet gives us a sense of connection and "knowledge", but we need to be extra careful. There are so many dark, confused teachings now - that are disconnected from sacred truths. Your biggest problem is you need to organize all of the data you have gathered. You will not be able to do Vedic astrology well unless you understand the Vedic concepts. That's why the we start with an entire course with four master classes on Indian concepts.

Your Soul's Evolution
Knowing these frameworks deeply, allows you to notice how the principles behind astrology AND life. Once this happens, you start working on higher and higher leverage principles, which permeate your entire life. Then astrology stops just being something you are using to try to figure yourself out. You need to think bigger.

#2 - "Priority and Sequence" is Everything. 🧐
The course is laid out with everything in the right place. The first thing you learn comes first. The next thing you learn is supposed to come next. If you do not do that, then it is like trying to drive your car before you've even sat down in the seat or put the key in the ignition.

Your whackadoodle strange questions!
you may not realize it, but to me most questions I get about astrology are really quite crazy and they emanate from things being wildly out of sequence and completely UN prioritized. It's like asking why the steering wheel isn't executing the left turn before you've even gotten in the car or started it! 🤪

#3 - Save Time - Go Deep Not Shallow 🧐
This time-wasting/ “snacking” problem is simple. Stop doing it. Similar to in your life and your diet. If you keep eating junk food you're going to get fat, lazy and have poor health. If you base the strength of your immune system and you are physical power on what's capable by eating junk food, it will be a skewed perspective indeed.

Or are you not serious after all?
I realized that most people who read these pages, and who consider investing in getting trained properly, are actually just not that serious. That's probably you. You like dabbling with astrology and you like learning about your chart and sort of playing around with it, but you're just not that serious. Hey, that's fine. But if you are serious, hear this. You're never going to learn it properly unless you invest in it and take it seriously / get properly trained. It is that or keep entertaining yourself. But also realize if you're doing that, it's because you're just not that serious. Don't be under any illusions. I'm certainly not. 🤭

#4 - More Connected to Spirit, Self and Community 😎
The need to practice with peers and plug-in to community (called "Satsang") is Crucial. It is hard to find these days. It is not hard to find "people online" now to talk to or "listen to". But it is very hard to find "Satsang", a gathering of the WISE – a group of people we should be listening to. Compare this type of "Community" to the chat section of youtube or Facebook. That is the "illusion of community" and is likely DISconnecting you from truth.

And it keeps growing everyday
At our school, we mostly have our "Satsang" online. Then once a month meet in person. The Vedic Astrology family is so important. We also meet live on Zoom calls to discuss specific questions and share. We also meet in person at conferences to reconnect person to person. Great friendships are formed and our skills reinforced at these times. We even had our first Faculty Conference

What is the P5 System?

"The System" is Everything
Anything you have ever learned, or learned correctly happened because there was a SYSTEM in place. After close to a decade of certification courses, and more than a decade of full-time teaching, I decided to formally name the astrological method that I have been using / teaching and perfecting since I began my full time practice in 2004.

I decided to name it the “P5 System”.
What is the P5 System?

It stands for:

Purpose
Principles
Principles Stacking
Priority and Sequence
Practice with Peers

These 5 "P’s" are the "pillars" of any effective learning system.

Purpose - First you need to know the reason you are practicing astrology. This purpose is closely related to the reason you are alive. Lacking the sense of purpose your life will be confusing and you may drift between meaningless interactions with people, work and other experiences. That's why I put a lot of importance on describing “what is astrology”, “what is life”, “what is the purpose behind anything”. After you answer these questions your relationships improve, your work improves and a sense of peace settles into your life. Many try to learn astrology with a confused life purpose. In that case, astrology itself can be confusing to you, and actually deepen your lack of purpose. This is quite common nowadays, where people see astrology as "fortune telling" and as a way to fix their problems. So, the first part of the P5 method is to reconnect to a sense of purpose and connect that to astrology.

Principles - Once you get clear about the purpose of astrology, and life, and see the connection between the two, you need to get clear about the universal principles of astrology. These necessary building blocks give you enormous confidence, because you are able to break things down to "bite-size chunks" that are easily comprehensible and digestible. Overwhelm is one of the biggest problems you can have when you start to learn astrology, or any subject. Karma, the elements, the planets, the Signs, the evolutionary principles - the same spiritual principles of life must be your focus at first. Then, you can refer those things back to the higher purpose.

Principles Stacking - Next, you need to stack those principles on top of each other. When you do this your astrological (and life awareness) skyrocket and you make swift and rapid progress in those areas. It's at this point you begin to see enormous growth and change, as you begin to feel in your bones how anger and frustration evolves into discipline (Mars). How fear evolves into concentration and awareness (Saturn). This growth, wisdom and progress is then passed on to those in your life, your loved ones, your clients your career and relationships. The evolution of your actions (fire) and wealth (earth) and principles (Jupiter) are examples of principle stacking.

Priority and Sequence - After you correctly use these principles, to understand the basic mechanics of the chart, then you need to prioritize those principles and deploy them in the proper sequence. You use "priority and sequence" in your life all the time, with things you do successfully. Imagine trying to make an omelette, but doing things in the wrong order or in the wrong measure. Imagine dumping 5 teaspoons of salt in the pan first, then stirring it with a fork, then turning on the burner, then cracking the egg. YUM! Guess what, when I hear most people talk about astrology, this is how it sounds to me. After a while, those strange approaches will jump out at you also. This is really the secret sauce to the subtlety and nuance necessary to be a great astrologer.

Practice with Peers - lastly, you need to practice these methods, in a safe environment, with others who have learned the same systems and who understand the science. There's no substitute for the "Satsang" or "gathering of the wise", especially when you first begin to learn a complicated science like astrology. That's why the certification course, and in all my courses, I set up an exclusive member forum for you. So, you can relax and rest assured that all of your questions will get answered, either by me or other trained teachers.

Focus on Universal Principles First
The reason the P5 Astrology system works so well is because it focuses on the Universal principles, just like every other Science. For example, the rules of architecture work regardless of culture, system or anything else. If you do not honor the rules of architecture, the Universal Law of Gravity will crash your house to the ground.

Similarly, if you do not know the Universal laws of astrology (and all metaphysics), the Universal Law of Karma will crash your life in no time. The reason so many astrologers are not good astrology teachers is because they are not teaching from a foundational point of view, focusing on the Universal principles.

Here are a few of the most important Universal Principles:

The planets themselves as karakas (Gods)
The 3 Gunas (body/mind/soul)
The Five elements (Earth/water/fire/air/space)
The 4 Purusarthas (Dharma/artha/kama/moksha)
The Castes (Brahmin/Kshatriya/Vaishya/Sudra)
Gender - Inner and outer (Masculine / Feminine/Neuter)
Modalities (Moveable/Fixed/Dual)
Natural Benefic / Malefic
Functional Benefic / Malefic
Gentle / Cruel
Yogas (Sambandha - connections)
Planetary Order
Nature of Houses
Astronomy
Visual / observational phenomena

These frameworks not only underpin Vedic astrology, they underpin all metaphysical systems the world over, and they always have. This is why there are so many Western astrologers, and metaphysicians from other disciplines, who take my courses. Given the heavy emphasis on these common frameworks, yoga teachers and Ayurvedic practitioners find this certification course to be stellar.

But even if you are a beginner, the frameworks can be easily grasped, then each planet, sign, house and principal is simply "hung" on that framework.
For instance:
Aries is Rajasic (passionate), fiery, masculine, ruled by Mars, Cardinal, large, quadruped
Scorpio is Tamasic (protective), watery, feminine, ruled by Mars, fixed, Slender, insect.

Both signs are ruled by Mars, yet we can see specifically how they are different from each other, and how they are alike. This is systematic and flawless. Using these frameworks correctly allows you to simply state each principle, and untangle their meanings for yourself and others. Of course, this is a simple example. But all of astrology functions on the complexity of these simple building blocks.

By the way, as was said, these are the same principles that underpin medicine, architecture, music and anything else that we can master at a high level. Things become complicated when we become disconnected from their component qualities and the Universal principles that create it.

Each week you can digest the next 90 minute video, that I have recorded for you, based on the lesson plan and schedule detailed below. You will move together through the week's lesson - and your week's manual. You will watch this at your leisure and when you have the "mental space" to fit in. You will likely develop a "study time ritual" with the video trainings.
After you have sufficiently digested the information, you will do that week's homework assignment. ~ Module 1 - Introduction to Indian Science
You will learn how the ancient Vedic texts, such as the rig Veda and the other Vedas led to other groups of texts, such as the Upahishads and Brahmanas. Then, how those texts led to the Puranas ( those that explain deities such as Lord Shiva, etc.). Then, how they lead to the great classics such as the Maha Barata and the Ramaya., And how those texts eventually led to the great Vedic sciences, such as yoga, Ayurveda and Vedic astrology.Universal principles such as the five elements, the 3 GUnas, The Chakras, Koshas, Karma and Dharma will be discussed at length, giving a large frame for the Vedic astrology practice. It is impossible to grasp the Vedic concepts without this knowledge and understanding of the history of Santana Dharma, Indian philosophy.

~ Module 2 - Introduction to Indian Science
You will learn how the Vedic sciences, studied in the previous module, begin to form Vedic astrology. First, we go very deeply into each planet and the signs that planet rules.Universal principles such as masculine and feminine, the gunas, elements, are reaffirmed. Also, principles unique to the astrology signs are focused on in greater depth. They include, the modalities, the castes.
There's a great emphasis on looking at "planets and signs". We are looking at charts the entire course, beginning with this module. Thus, immediately you learn how to compare Gunas, elements, modalities and motivations between planets and signs.
Other important concepts include the planetary order in how spirit takes form, exultation and debilitation points are examined in the synthesis is achieved as planets and signs are compared and contrasted with each other.

~ Module 3 - Introduction to Indian Science
You will learn the secret power and connection in the astrology houses. You will learn several important frameworks such as how "one thing leads to another", how each house is the culmination of the previous house and the origin point of the following house. You will also learn the powerful frameworks related to the four aims of life: Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha - and how these lessons culminates and evolve through body, mind and spirit.Also, we will unpack the lunar nodes, and start to approach helps use them in the astrology chart. Also, we will begin to look at more important astronomical phenomena such as combustion and retrograde.
This module is in preparation for the purely "Vedic" methods. The course until this time has been largely teaching universal principles, that are common to all astrology systems. Beginning with module for we pitted into the purely Vedic methods.

Only now that we begin approaching the purely "Vedic" methods. At this point the course starts to get more complicated as you will actually learn how to do the calculations for planetary dignity. You will also start to learn the complex and subtle rules for house lordship.Also, we spend several weeks integrating Nakshatra's into your astrological understanding. But we go further than just rote memorization. You're taught how to actually use a Nakshatra's in chart analysis, by redoubling our efforts on the deities of the Nakshatra's and what do they trigger in their dasa cycles.
In addition, we start getting into planetary aspects and yogas. These two very important functional aspects of Vedic astrology begin to prepare us for actual chart analysis.

There is a lot of practice and integration of the earlier modules as we look toward level two.
